The Science of Randomness

Randomness is a core concept in computing, used for everything from video games to cryptography. But did you know that computers, which are strictly logical machines, have a hard time being truly random?

Types of Randomness

Pseudo-Random (PRNG)

Generated by a mathematical formula. It looks random, but if you know the starting point (seed), you can predict the sequence. Fast and good for simulations.

True Random (TRNG)

Derived from physical phenomena like atmospheric noise or radioactive decay. Unpredictable and essential for high-security encryption.

Common Uses

  • Gaming: Determining loot drops, enemy behavior, or card shuffles.
  • Security: Generating encryption keys and secure tokens.
  • Simulation: Modeling complex systems like weather or stock markets (Monte Carlo simulations).
