More Than Just Counting Birthdays

Calculating age seems simple—just subtract the birth year from the current year, right? But when you need precision (years, months, and days), things get tricky thanks to the quirks of our calendar system.

The Math Behind the Date

Our Gregorian calendar is a mix of 30-day months, 31-day months, and the unique 28 (or 29) days of February. An accurate age calculator must navigate these irregularities to give you a precise count.

The Leap Year Problem

Every 4 years (mostly), we add a day to keep our calendar in sync with the Earth's orbit. If you were born on Feb 29th, technically you only have a birthday every 4 years!

Age is Cultural

Did you know that 'age' is defined differently around the world?

  • Korean Age (Traditional): You are 1 year old the moment you are born, and you gain a year on New Year's Day, not your birthday.
  • International Age: You start at 0 and gain a year on your birth date. This is the standard used by this calculator.

Biological vs. Chronological

This tool calculates your chronological age (time passed). However, scientists also study 'biological age'—how fast your cells are aging compared to the average. Read more about Ageing on Wikipedia.
